D2L was founded in 1999 by John Baker. At the time, his engineering class was being challenged to look at the world in a new way. Instead of coming up with answers, they were asked to come up with questions—questions that nobody had really even asked. John realized that despite all the changes technology was facilitating in the world, the University campus where he stood seemed almost untouched by that change. The question he came up with was: how can we use technology to dramatically transform and improve learning—not just for him and his university, but for learners everywhere? The more John thought about this question over the last fifteen years, the more he has come to believe that one of the most important things we can do to help each other is ensure that everyone has access to the best possible learning opportunities—opportunities enabled by our best teaching and our best technologies. Today, D2L is working with clients around the world to help learners at a scale that was hard to imagine in 1999.
