Microsoft OneDrive vs. Alternatives in 2023

Every business has different needs and requirements. Therefore, it is essential to compare and analyze various alternatives. The three major competitors of One Drive are Google Drive, Dropbox, and iCloud.
  • Functionality: Google Drive is a file storage and document sharing platform by Google Inc. Google Drive offers all the necessary features for document storage and sharing including, team collaboration, document sharing outside the organization, advanced search features, drag & drop uploads, mobile app scan to upload documents directly, starred folders and files, convert documents into editable form, and document tagging. As compared to One Drive, Google Drive also offers a wide set of features, the app scan is what gives Google Drive an edge on One Drive.

Dropbox is a cloud-based document-sharing software for Windows, Android, and iOS. The features offered by Dropbox include screenshot sharing, comment-based discussion, selective sync, Desktop & document backup, offline mode, access to previous versions, remote file deletion, image/picture backup, and notification customization. The feature set offered by both Dropbox and One Drive are similar, however, OneDrive offers in-app document editing support which makes document sharing more synchronized.

iCloud is a cloud-based platform for document sharing and file storage for iOS. The features offered by iCloud include, iCloud Drive, iCloud Storage Plans (additional file storage), iCloud Photo Library (cloud-based photo storage), Family Sharing (account and resource sharing), Safari, iCloud Keychain services, and more. However, the only drawback is that iCloud is available only for iOS and Mac users. Therefore, Windows, Android, and other OS users can use OneDrive and other alternatives suggested.
  • Support: It rarely happens that a product and its alternatives offer strong support to the users. There are always ifs and buts. However, OneDrive and all three alternatives discussed offering the same customer support to help users with their queries and concerns. Documentation, videos, email and chat support, and online training.
  • Pricing: The cost of Dropbox is around $9.99 per month for Plus Plan. Whereas Dropbox family is priced at $16.99 per month. The cost of a Google drive for a Basic plan is 100 GB. $1.99 / month whereas other pricing plans are priced at $19.99 / year with100 GB storage and $29.99 / year for 200 GB storage. However, the price of iCloud starts from $3.5 for 50 GB. However, price varies from region to region.
