Bottom Line: Which is Better - QuickBooks or FreshBooks?

Quickbooks vs FreshBooks

About the providers

Quickbooks is brought by Intuit, an accounting giant, having tremendous expertise in accounting software package development and offers both on-premise as well as cloud based versions. The beta version was out in the market way back in 1983 by Scott Cook and Tom Proulx in the USA. Till date, it has captured about 85% of the business accounting market.

FreshBooks was co-founded by Mike McDerment and Joe Sawada in 2003. Since then, it has grown to serve almost the entire globe with its cloud only solutions, with over 1.6 million users.

Ease of use

FreshBooks is compatible with wide range of gadgets like iPhone, iPad and Android which ensures that your business is not hampered when you are on the move. User could move from estimate to invoice in a matter of few clicks, process is straight-forward. FreshBooks got a whopping 97.3% customer satisfaction score which brings to the light the fact that they are extremely user-friendly. FreshBooks also boasts of a customizable Expenditure report which offers user a bird’s eye view of your expenses. User could also filter the details by parameters like group, merchant, customer etc. FreshBooks also supports a decent knowledge base support for its users and also shows details of accountants near your location. Free Invoice Creator and Free Invoice Template makes your accounting pursuits a breeze.

Quickbooks does not come with any help guide or descriptions to help users who are newbies in the field of accounting or in using accounting softwares. Navigation is not easy like FreshBooks and there are some uncalled-for steps in the application which makes the case even more worse.

Reliability

FreshBooks also boast of an amiable support team, however they don’t support 24*7 support. They are available only from Monday to Friday 8 am to 8 pm ET, if a crisis situation occurs out of this time period you may be out of luck. FreshBooks offers both mail support and phone support to the users.

QuickBooks support team also fails to offer support on weekends, which is a serious flaw that both accounting applications need to work on. It also does not offer any kind of knowledge base and video tutorial which if implemented could help individuals with less accounting knowledge to use the system with much ease.

Speed

Quickbooks would need a minimum empty space of 256 MB for fast operation. Once automatic updates are off, then the real fast paced accounting action will come to picture. It only displays about 13 transactions at one go. If you need to proceed further, you need to click next and get access to the next set of 13 transactions. This is more tedious in a busy enterprise. For the security, Quickbooks uses a single code auto-generated in the system, but it takes ages to reach your mailbox, until then, it’s time out.

FreshBooks has more focus on time tracking and not on accounting, so making entries don’t take that much of time, so it gains a small upper hand on speed over Quickbooks. The invoicing and other modules are comparatively faster. The mail system is terribly slow, since they are connected to the Yahoo mail servers.

Features

FreshBooks is an intuitive online accounting application and is specially designed to cater to the needs of small business applications. Invoicing feature goes an extra mile and enables users to support branding thereby leveraging your business pursuits. User could send invoice details through mail, download PDF copy and also take a print out of the copy for future reference. Invoices also accept credit card as payment method and user could also send recurrent invoices to customers. For businesses which are eyeing global reach, FreshBooks is a good option to consider as they back multi-currency invoicing features. Invoice autobiography comes up with different statuses like payment, viewed, sent and created which enables you to apprehend who has viewed the payment status and is slow to make payments. This helps you to send reminders to the customers so that user could relish healthy cash flow. FreshBooks also supports integration with most of the leading business apps like PayPal, Basecamp etc. At the core of FreshBooks lies an efficient expenditure capture system. It enables user to save your valuable time by importing and classifying expenditures from multiple sources. User could also keep track of the time spend on projects for easier invoicing. User could also record billable time from anywhere in the globe.

QuickBooks back online banking integration with most of the leading globes around the globe to facilitate easier accounting. User could also download the account transactions with the help of QuickBooks. This helps user to do away with manual errors and reconciliation errors. Quickbooks back iPhone, iPod and Android support and user could also incorporate images and notes for easy operation. Electronic signatures can also be added through smart phones. Quickbooks boast of a comprehensive payroll software which facilitates easy login to the system. Salary calculation, pay slips, employee self-service etc. are effortless with Quickbooks application. User could relish features like automatic update of payroll transactions as well. It also comes with an efficient book keeping system which helps to send invoice, deal with expenses and track firm data in a no-hassle manner. Memorized billing transaction is yet another feature worth mentioning. Discounts and offers could be incorporated to lure customers.

Security

FreshBooks scores high in the security aspect and gets all the leading security features like encryption of confidential data, HTTPS and even Multi-factor authentication features. However, it does not support data back up in different locations which could prove to be detrimental in case of system crash or natural disaster.

Quickbooks is powered by good security features like SSL encryption, and it undergoes penetration testing which helps it to keep track of software susceptibilities and fix them. Quickbooks need to work on multi-factor authentication features for it to scale up with respect to security feature.

Summary

Quickbooks is the obvious choice here as it is being widely used by a huge customer base. FreshBooks is relatively new and is undergoing constant changes to cope up with the dynamism of accounting world. With Quickbooks, users will have confidence as it is more secured, faster and simpler.
