VMware vCloud Suite vs. Alternatives in 2024

The main competitors for VMware vCloud Suite are XenServer and Parallels Virtuozzo Containers.

XenServer is an open source virtualization solution for server management, with support for both public & private clouds. It can support both Windows & Linux operating systems as well as virtualization of desktops and cloud based environments. Cloud based virtual machines can be successfully isolated using multi-tenant models, with firewalls and robust networking protocols to ensure security. There is a central dashboard XenCenter to monitor all virtual environments, as well as XenMotion to move virtual machines to allow server maintenance to be done without impacting operations.

VMware vCloud Suite on the other hand addresses only private cloud installation, but includes a site recovery manager to handle disaster recovery for virtualized instances and another module to handle networking and security. Additionally there are options to track performance, optimize capacity, streamline configuration as well as automate policy & administrative setup for each environment.

Then there is Parallel Virtuozzo Containers which includes advanced resource management for performance improvement, immediate provisioning to enable cloud servers instantly, and integration with other applications & systems using an API. Additionally there are application templates which can be used for software deployment amongst numerous virtual servers. The product also provides over three times more virtual servers on one physical server than other competing solutions.

VMware cloud does not fully support all of these features but does include a Log Insight module for analysis and monitoring of both physical & virtual server operating environments. Additionally it includes a storage area network to manage cloud based storage requirements.
