What is Directworks?

Directworks is a cloud-based direct materials sourcing software designed to help sourcing professionals perform their job more efficiently and faster. The software can help users to manage Request for Information (RFI), Request for Quotation (RFQ) and sharing documents or conversations using the collaboration tools. It is also designed to offer smarter sourcing decisions by helping to select the right suppliers for your supply chain.

Directworks was founded back in 2004 with a strong software platform built for empowering sourcing professionals and help them do their job in a smart and efficient way. The software can help manufacturers to reduce cost and keep IT costs low by offering SaaS solutions (Software as a service). It can automate most of the spreadsheet-driven tasks and meet the necessary requirements of manufacturers.

Directworks Typical Customers

Directworks is perfect for large manufacturing companies. The software is designed for aerospace & defense, automotive, consumer goods, diversified industrial, high tech and medical devices manufacturing industries. Whirlpool, B/E Aerospace and TRW are some of the clients of Directworks.

Directworks Features

It’s always about building profitable products for manufacturers and that’s where Directworks can help them. The software can streamline processes, offers better risk management and compliance and can help users to get quality materials delivered on time. Some of the key features of Directworks are: RFx automation, total cost analysis, reporting, dashboards, secure sharing of drawings and technical data and analytics. The software offers SaaS deployment option which means users can get started in a very short time by paying very minimal up-front cost.

Directworks can help users to track, manage and measure potential and active supplies by capturing supplier capability information, offering better supplier collaboration, making sure that the suppliers have the capacity to fulfill your demand and monitoring and auditing supplier performance.

The process automation section offers automating early supplier collaboration for New Product Introduction, parts qualification, engineering project tracking, transferring of parts from one supplier to another and purchase order approval process.

Directworks 5 Pros

  • Directworks is specifically designed for large manufacturing companies including automotive, high tech and consumer goods
  • Directwork’s implementation service can help you to go live in a very short time
  • Unlike other PLM sourcing and indirect sourcing tools, Directworks offers compliance and risk controls
  • The tool supports integration with a user’s existing ERP, PLM and homegrown application
  • The software mostly focuses on direct materials sourcing and supplier management to help manufacturers build profitable products

Directworks 2 Cons

  • Directworks doesn’t offer asset management, auto-matching and inventory management features like other similar tools
  • Directworks’ vendor management part doesn’t offer contact management and supplier master data feature

Directworks Alternatives

Some of the major competitors for Directworks are SciQuest and LiveSource.

SciQuest provides e-sourcing solutions which are available in the cloud to optimize the procurement process of manufacturers. It provides two products with the first being Sourcing Director which ensures best practice purchasing workflows, self-service supplier portals, and analytic tools with dashboards to monitor sourcing effectiveness. There is also an Advanced Sourcing Optimizer which provides templates for bid requirements, scenario modeling to forecast bid responses, as well as bid analysis procedures which include evaluation & scoring methods.

Directworks in comparison is also available in the cloud and provides a similar solution. However it provides additional features such as a fully fledged document management system, capacity planning & auditing options, bid costing analysis, as well as product qualification procedures. Additionally it has in-built support for major compliance standards for government, environmental and export control regulations.

Then there is LiveSource which focuses on auctions to ensure competitive bidding, and supplier discovery to match requirements and pre-qualify suppliers prior to the bidding process starting. Additionally there is a collaboration platform to engage with suppliers and exchange information, and business intelligence tools to monitor supplier performance. It also supports compliance with Conflict Minerals regulations for raw materials sourcing.

While Directworks does not support these features at this stage, it does include business process automation which includes engineering project tracking to streamline procurement requirements, as well as parts purchasing transfer to different suppliers based on requirements and costing reviews.
