What is FreshBooks?

FreshBooks is an accounting solution designed to be used online. It was developed for small businesses. It came up of an idea from Mike McDerment who thought there should be a better way to create invoices. In 2003 he and Joe Sawada cofounded FreshBooks out of Anicon which happens to be his previous Internet marketing consulting business.

Today FreshBooks is being used by over 5 million individuals who use it to track time and manage expenses. FreshBooks has earned the 2013 IXDA Award for iPhone design and the 2013 Stevie Awards for customer service. It is now being used by customers in over 120 countries

FreshBooks Typical Customers

From day one, FreshBooks was intended for Freelancers and small businesses who just don't want to waste their time using Excel or Microsoft Word when invoicing their client. The website is designed to be used as an online billing service. Freelancers and businesses that can benefit from this online software can be found in industries related to constructions, finances, manufacturing and even retail.

FreshBooks makes it easy for small contractors to organize expenses and charge their clients based on a proper documentation of the job being done.

FreshBooks Features

The online accounting software can help your business track the time being spent on a particular job, record all expense related to it, take into account taxes involved and finally generate an invoice based on that. The accounting platform also allows the users to set late payment reminders, auto-payment and attach receipt as proof whenever required.

Because the online software is available on smartphones too, you should be able to bill your client no matter where you find yourself.

FreshBooks 5 Pros

  • Available in 3 different languages
  • Accessible on mobile devices and tablets
  • Automatic Expense Import
  • Features a late payment reminders
  • Time Tracking feature is available

FreshBooks 2 Cons

  • Only accessible through the internet
  • FreshBooks does not fit large enterprise

FreshBooks Alternatives

Other online accounting websites that could compete with FreshBooks are softwares like Xero, PaySimple, Nutcache, FreeAgent, Zoho Books and Blinksale. Nutcache, Zoho Books and Blinksale have the advantage of having been developed with large enterprises in mind but unfortunately, none of them support portable devices.

It is only PaySimple and Nutache that don't support the Open API platform, all the others do. When it comes to Google apps, PaySimple,  FreeAgent,  Blinksale have failed to integrate it but their competitors did.

FreshBooks has the advantage of offering its platform in 3 different languages (English, French, Spanish). Nutcache is the only competitors who went ahead to even add more languages like Chinese, Portuguese, Japanese and Italian. The other competitors only support the English language.

When it comes to price, Nutcache beats them all. While FreshBooks and the rest offer their service for a monthly fee, Nutcache remains free with no limitations whatsoever.

FreshBooks Pricing Information
