Tableau Server vs. Alternatives in 2024

The main competitors for Tableau Server are Birst and Sisense.

Birst is a business intelligence tools that can be deployed both as an on premise and cloud based solution. It can retrieve data from a variety of sources both on premise as well as through the cloud, and there is a collaboration platform for joint analysis to help in the decision making process. Additional features include its logical query language to build complex analytic requirements, with support of guided visual discovery which recommends better analytic methods to help users obtain the desired information.

In comparison Tableau Server is a web enabled solution that supports mobile device access for review and analysis of information. It also supports collaboration features like Birst with options to comment on reports & dashboards to seek feedback, as well as embed these dashboards in company portals for viewing. The product supports real-time user querying for immediate information visualization as well, and includes data access standards to ensure data integrity is not compromised due to this.

Then there is Sisense which uses in-memory optimization to improve query performance so that it can handle large data volumes including that of unstructured Big Data. However it provides a unique query collaboration process which allows greater performance improvements as the number of queries increase, otherwise known as Crowd Accelerated BI. Additionally the product is cloud based unlike Tableau Server.

However Tableau Server does provide options for GIS and mapping integration which is not currently supported by Sisense. Additionally the product can be operated using virtualization technology to improve performance and consolidate storage requirements.
