VMware Workstation 9 vs. Alternatives in 2024

The main competitors for VMware Workstation are Citrix Xen Desktop and Oracle VM Virtualbox.

Oracle VM Virtualbox provides virtualization solutions for desktops and supports multiple platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris. It supports the setup of multiple virtual instances on one PC and allows the import and export of virtual appliances between PCs. There is also an in built video capture system to record all actions taken on an individual instance, as well as the ability to network multiple instances if required among different desktops.

VMware Workstation on the other hand focuses only on Windows and Linux operating systems. While it supports some of the same features as Oracle VM Virtualbox, it also provides options to integrate with cloud based virtual instances. There is a virtual network editor to connect multiple applications over different virtual machines. Additionally VMware Workstation can be run as a server to share multiple instances within a team.

Citrix Xen Desktop in comparison allows mobile device virtualized solutions with the appropriate security protocols in place to protect key data and network access. Desktop virtualization solutions can also be delivered via the cloud to any remote user for operation and management. This includes support for business continuity and use of multiple instances to ensure operations continue even in the case of unplanned system downtime.

While VMware Workstation also supports cloud based delivery and management of virtual machines, it also includes an option to put an expiry date on a virtual machine so that it is time bound. This is a useful feature for project or contract based teams.
