VMware Fusion 5 vs. Alternatives in 2024

The main competitors for VMware Fusion are Parallels Desktop and Codeweavers Crossover.

Parallels Desktop offers a virtualization solution to run a Windows PC instance on a Mac. The product allows a straight forward transfer of all windows based documents, files and settings to the Mac, as well as allows the running of Windows only applications on the Mac. Additionally it can optimize the virtual instance automatically to deliver better performance, as well as allows the saving and sharing of information on cloud based services which can integrate with Windows.

VMware Fusion on the other hand provides a similar solution but allows windows applications to be used like Mac applications without any additional configuration. Additionally users can utilize Mac and Windows applications simultaneously if required. VMware Fusion also offers 64 bit multi-core processing to improve performance, as well as utilizes power efficiency algorithms with the Mac’s GPUs to ensure mobile devices’ battery life is not depleted significantly from running these virtual environments.

Then there is Codeweavers Crossover which allows users to maintain multiple Windows environments in self contained “bottles” which can even run different versions of Windows. Also in addition to having similar core features as VMware Fusion, Codeweavers Crossover includes the option to run Windows virtual machines on Linux operating systems as well.

In comparison VMware Fusion does not currently support running Windows on Linux and is focused only on Mac environments. It does however provide Mac gesture control features on Windows environments and allows the Mac to connect to windows only devices which would otherwise be inaccessible.
